Hillary Hanson

International Project Advisor, Smithsonian Office of Global Affairs

Hillary Hanson is an International Project Advisor with the Office of Global Affairs. She is currently supporting implementation of global activities and strategic development. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Hillary worked managing complex, multimillion dollar initiatives across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Islands. She has worked extensively with governments, civil society, universities, and the private sector to strengthen governance and build sustainable partnerships. Her career includes leading global programs with government entities and philanthropic foundations, where she established and managed country offices, conducted field research, and developed programming. Having lived and worked in Ukraine, Japan, and Papua New Guinea, Hillary brings a deep appreciation for cultural exchange and commitment to fostering international cooperation in support of the Smithsonian’s mission. She holds an MA in Strategic Communication from Michigan State University and a BA in Political Science with a minor in Spanish from Iowa State University.
