Stephanie Norby is the Director of the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access (SCLDA). Within the Institution, the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access (SCLDA) is a center of excellence focused on establishing the Smithsonian as a learning laboratory for everyone. As new technologies make it possible for audiences to connect with Smithsonian researchers, collections, and educational programs like never before, SCLDA’s mission is to coordinate among the museums and offices within the Smithsonian, provide models and methods that enable learners to access everything the Smithsonian has to offer, and empower learners to explore their own interests and engage with others. Stephanie also directs the creation of the Smithsonian Learning Lab, a new web-based platform for the discovery and creation of personalized learning experiences.

For more than 10 years, she has worked as a core Western faculty member of the Science for Monks program teaching science to Tibetan monastics in India.

Through local, regional and international workshops, Stephanie directs trainings for educators and museum professionals. Her collaboration with all Smithsonian museums and research units involve education programs in art, history, culture and science. She chairs a council of educators who represent Smithsonian museums and research units, and produces virtual conferences presenting Smithsonian research and collections to individuals and peer institutions around the world.

Programs

Science for Monks   Active

Smithsonian works with the Sager Foundation and the Exploratorium to build science capacity in Tibetan monastic communities through the Science for Monks program. The program fulfills a mandate from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to create a mutually beneficial dialogue between Tibetan Buddhist practices and modern science.

SHOUT Program   Active

In November 2010, the Smithsonian launched a collaboration with Microsoft Partners in Learning in CapeTown, South Africa. Shout was a multiyear global education initiative offering webinars and projects for both educators and students, inviting educators and students to take an active role in global environmental issues. SHOUT was supported by TakingITGlobal and Microsoft Partners in Learning.
