Smithsonian staff work with local and international partners training the next generation of biodiversity scientists in Indonesia at the Indonesian Biodiversity Research Center (IBRC), created in 2010 to promote biodiversity research and build educational and scientific capacity in Indonesia. Funded by the United States Agency for International Development and the National Science Foundation, the program was founded by Udayana University, Diponegoro University, the State University of Papua, University of California Los Angeles, and the Smithsonian Institution.
