Curator of fishes Lynne Parenti has been studying the freshwater and coastal fishes of northwestern Borneo for more than 20 years. In 2010, Dr. Parenti led the first-ever field survey of the freshwater and coastal fishes of the southeastern province of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This survey resulted in the discovery and description of two new species of rice fishes. Findings from this research challenged conventional wisdom that all island are colonized by dispersal.
